Sweet Medicine

By: Carmen Abner

Morning unshackles the bondage of time.
Eternal tomorrow on wing.
The blind are awakened to visions of day.
The mute lift their voices and sing.

Illness does flee at sweet medicine’s touch.
The walls of the deaf tumble down.
Steel bars fly open as liberty calls.
The circle of peace comes around.

Sorrow and suffering are called to an end.
The weary take comfort in right.
He comes not with trumpets. He makes not a sound.
Like the dawn star; the thief of the night.

Illness does flee at sweet medicine’s touch.
The walls of the deaf tumble down.
Steel bars fly open as liberty calls.
The circle of peace comes around.

He comes not with fury nor girdle of gold.
His tongue not with edge but with song.
His hand reaching out to the children of earth
Confined ‘neath the heel of the strong.

Illness does flee at sweet medicine’s touch.
The walls of the deaf tumble down.
Steel bars fly open as liberty calls.
The circle of peace comes around.

The circle of peace comes around.
