The night was long when Jesus met
His loved ones in the room.
The time had come, the mission set,
His future bed, the tomb.

That night he washed their dirty feet,
Though they could not perceive,
This service, which they must repeat,
To show that they believe.

The one who would betray took part
In eating with them there.
The devil planted in his heart,
To kill the Christ who cared.

Although our Lord knew death was near,
A new command he’d show:
To share the love that was sincere,
So that the world would know.
